Carers Allowance
Carers Allowance is a benefit that can be paid to a person that is caring for someone that is in receipt of either;
Attendance Allowance at either level,
Personal Independence Payment (PIP) - Daily Living Component
Disability Living Allowance (DLA) - Care Component at either middle or higher rate
You can claim this if you are still working (depending on how much you are earning).
For this year 2020/2021 this is paid at the rate of £66.15 per week.
Am I eligible for Carers Allowance?
If you are caring for someone on one of the above benefits for at least 35 hours per week then yes you may well qualify. However, there are certain other conditions that will apply namely:-
- you must be over 16 years
- you must not be studying for more than 21 hours per week
- you can earn up to £123 per week and still claim Carers Allowance
Will I still be able to claim Carers Allowance as I am receiving my State Pension?
Carers Allowance and State Pensions are classed as "overlapping" benefits. If your State Pension is less than £66.15 per week then you could receive Carers Allowance to make the total of the State Pension and the Carers Allowance £66.15.
You are entitled to what is known as "an underlying entitlement to Carers Allowance". This would be helpful if you were to claim any means tested benefit. For example Pension Credit.
How would I apply for Carers Allowance?
There is a form which can be completed online. We will be more than happy to help you to do this if you want any assistance.
If you would like further details, or would like to find out whether you qualify for Carers Allowance, please call into the office. We are open Mon-Fri from 10 am to 1 pm or you can telephone us on 02380 841199 and ask to speak to one of the I & A team.
